Japanese Word for "Japan"

The Japanese word for Japan is nihon. The way to say it phonetically is "nee-hohn".

Here's how to write the kanji for nihon, the Japanese word for Japan:

The kanji for sun --pronounced nee The kanji for origin --pronounced hohn

And here's how to write nihon in hiragana:

Hiragana for ni, pronounced nee Hiragana for ho, pronounced hoh Hiragana for n

In this case, popular belief is actually true: nihon actually does mean "The Land of the Rising Sun".

That's because the first kanji means "sun" and the second one means "origin".

The word for Japan actually used to be nippon. That's still an alternative way to pronounce the Japanese word for Japan, but it's a completely outdated way saying it
